I'm trying to make a powerpoint at work that's going as slowly as elective surgery with packaging twine or some sort of agonizingly painful similar metaphor. I've Everybody Hurts stuck in my head for like 8 hours now, and my RPs are either being slow or depressing. SO A MEME!

Blargh. Yesterday my trusty mac decided to freeze and, upon restarting, not have a hard drive. Go figure that. In any case. I decided, to puchase a new one. I'd been considering it for a bit anyhow. And on the plus side. I now don't have to upgrade my os for chrome or netflix, and I get an L key that works! On the downside, my beautiful porn folder itunes and software I need to collect again! Weep!
But. It should be to me sometime between Thursday and Monday! (I upgraded the ram so there's a bit of turn around). So I'm on semi-hiatus though writing a scientific paper this week too so will be on computers a bunch (and likely desperate for distraction). We all know I suck at hiatuses.
Anyway! Meme!

so ![[info]](http://www.insanejournal.com/img/userinfo.gif) dtw_mods just did the karaoke meme, and I decided to look up when Under Pressure was released. Not because it's really relevant for any of my characters at this point, but because it's my favoritest song in forever and I knew it was released around 1981ish.
"Under Pressure" came out on 26 October 1981. That's awesome timing.

So I was on Pottermore (remember that site?) because Greenoaks is down and I needed to pick a wand out for a character when I read the following:
It is said that Merlin’s wand was of English oak (though his grave has never been found, so this cannot be proven).
And I guess on further reflection, I do know that's an Arthurian legend thing too. But my gut reaction was "HAH!" and then "Oh Edgar, you died too soon." |

So he's a character, as I've mentioned, that I've been batting around for ages, but I finally managed to finish my app for Crabbe over at tallymarks and he's one of those somewhat surprising characters.
He started off well enough--using his first post to essentially curbstomp Neville, but, even all that savagery aside. His muse, for a guy who sets ultimately sets himself on fire trying to kill people, is remarkably chill.
I kind of get the feeling Vince is pretty content where he is right now. Not that he doesn't have reason to be. Being on the IS is practically a carte blanche for him to do whatever. He's actually getting a bit of respect for being Vincent Crabbe and not just Draco's minion and not failing horribly at his classes apart from probably Arithmancy. (Though lol. Draco still got all the blame for that fight.) I mean, he looked inside a candyland box for actual candy. But I kind of feel he should be more angry or conflicted than he is. He's a terrible person, but I'm finding him kind of endearing in a dumb sort of way. Maybe he just needs more anger or conflict and I'm sure that will come. Or maybe he's actually a pretty chill guy, facesmashing aside. I don't know. It's just surprising how different he is from the other Death Eaters and proto-death eaters I've played.
I still want a Goyle though. You all know it'd be an epic bromance. Plus I want someone Vince can share his "deep" thoughts with. When he has some. |

HI GUYS. I didn't do a christmas wishlist, but I do have an awesome New Years RP wishlist.
For Phoenix Administration (pamods), a Trio-Era post DH game that's about six months strong, I have a few lines I'd love to see!
I just apped Myron Wagtail b_side, vocalist for the Weird Sisters from the Kurt Cobain school of frontmen. There's also Kaz's Orsino Thruston (gotthebeat) and Sarah's Donaghan Tremlett (gstrung).
We'd kill for a Manager. While the details are open, we were seeing someone female. Ideally this would be someone to keep the band in line when they get up to crazy hijinx, threaten wizard rehab, and promote the hell out of them. But that doesn't sound fun at all, you say? Sure it does, the sisters we've got now (only 3 of 8),
You've always wanted to herd cats. Plus there's the potential for great cougary action. MROW!
We'd also love to see more females in general (particularly younger and sisters fans, but I'm biased ;) ), c/o 98, and definitely Weird Sisters. I would love a Kirley Duke.
Additionally, at tallymarks which opens like.. now? I'd love a Goyle to my Crabbe. I'm getting a bit tangled up in his app because I keep feeling the need to reference back to him. |

Maybe I've not been around the block as much as some people, but this isn't really one of those discussions I've seen before, but I'm waiting on science, so why not open up pandora's box and try for one of those discussiony posts. This may be a bit tl;dr but I want to have a bit of a talk on wizards and religion.
First let me say, I'm not aiming to attack religion in any way, shape or form, express an opinion on it beyond speculations as to working it into fandom, nor am I trying to offend anyone.
I'll admit, I've never been sure exactly where wizards stand on religion, but it doesn't really tend to come up either in games or in canon. J.K. Rowling definitely doesn't touch upon it, and why would she? It's a kind of messy aspect of society and let's be honest, kind of potentially divisive. Harry's for all intents and purposes a muggleborn so whether or not he had any religious ties (which we never really see or have mentioned) one can assume they'd be of a muggle sort. The same is true for Hermione. McGonagall's backstory involves the Presbytyrian church, but with a muggle minister. But if McG had children, would they have gone to muggle church? what about her kids?
The Weasleys, the purebloods we know most about, it's never brought up. Although, for as much as "By Salazar" and "by Circe" or "Oh my Merlin and Elephant trousers!" or whatever are wizard exclamations of "Oh my god," I don't get the feeling they see Salazar Slytherin, Circe, or even Merlin as god-like figures for the most part. More, the Malfoys celebrate Christmas and I think some pureblood said "Oh my god" at some point--again, not proof of belief, but perhaps an oversight.

Obviously Christianity in Britain is suffering a decline, particularly the more institutionalized forms of it, like the Church of England. Catholicism and Judaism are facing declines, but it's not by any means gone. So what I'm wondering do wizards have churches? Do they use muggle ones? Particularly, where do pureblooded wizards fit into this scheme? If so what? There seem to be a few camps. One I've noticed a lot is that people either tend to place wizards as adherents to a more nature based religion or just not mentioning it at all to the point of ignorance of Christianity.
And I don't know how accurate that would be. Essentially, the Statute of Secrecy was enforced in 1692. That's post protestant reformation and post-establishment of the Church of England. However, longstanding pureblooded families like the Blacks had already, from what I gather, withdrawn from Muggle society. But would that mean that a 15th, 16th, or 17th century family would drop their religion as well? They seem the sort to take the institution with them, claiming that muggles stole it from them. Which to me would imply that perhaps there's some sort of wizard church and wizard clergy.

I guess part of the problem with implementing some stance on religion is that it would affect more than one character. Suddenly saying "purebloods are catholic" or "there's a Wizarding Church of England" has pretty broad implications for more characters than the single player interested in having that facet of their character. But is it that or more religion's kind of one of those third rails that's too close to the real world that people really don't want to touch upon in RP for fear of offending someone? Or is it in general just a stronger feeling that wizards wouldn't be Christian?
Because I think the theological conflict would add a fascinating dimension to a character involved in one of the sides of one the eras of the wars we play out.
